The Havana Bucket List

Havana is one of the liveliest cities in the Caribbean, it boasts non-stop, dusk till dawn partying for those who like to dance and enjoy the libation of the many local varieties. Bacardi Rum and the mojito were born here after all. Havana does have a quieter side if you're feeling something a little more low-key like cultural touring, local entertainment and more cafes then you can shake a stick at. Here is a shortlist of some must do's on your next trip to Havana.

1. Dinner at "La Bodeguita Del Medio" - one of Havana's most culturally affluent restaurants it has had the patronage of celebrities and dignitaries. Ernest Hemingway even graced the walls of La Bodeguita with his own graffiti "My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita" the mojito might be a good choice (hint, hint). Don't go planning a quiet evening at La Bodeguita it is well known and does get a fair amount of tourist traffic. To all you foodies out there, this is a real cultural experience more than it is a renaissance of culinary delights. The menu is mostly highlighted by Cuban food, beans, rice and more pork dishes then you could ever remember.

2. Visit "El Capitolio" or the "National Capitol Building" as it's often referred to is one of the most architecturally stunning buildings in Cuba. It once housed the Cuban government up until the Cuban revolution in 1959. An incredible sight, the building boasts the 3rd largest indoor statue in the world.

3. Got an inch for good grinds? You are never short of great cafes in Havana; in fact the city centre has more cafes per capita than most North American cities. That being said it's easy to get lost in all the variety, but a sure bet is the "Restaurante Café del Oriente" its located next to the promenade on Havana Bay and serves some delicious beverage choices, hot or cold. The entire area is old architecture and resonates culture, making a short break here a very memorable one.

4. Take a stroll down "El Malecon" boardwalk; it's a scenic hike along the Havana shoreline. It offers unbelievable views of the ocean and is a great way to work off all those espressos and great Cuban culinary treats.

5. Need some excitement? Havana is the place for that too. Check out "Club Salseando Chevere", it is one of the newest clubs in Havana and is home to some of the hottest salsa dancing on the planet. Whether you are a seasoned dancer or a fledging beginner, there is something for you. Instructors are available to those who request it. Club Salseando Chevere is an absolute amazing experience.
